Abstract

PURPOSE: The hydrolysis of nitrile derivative in the presence of a base is conducted using an organic quarternary ammonium salt and/or tertiary amine as a catalyst to produce advantageously title amide derivative that is useful as intermediate of drugs and agricultural chemicals
CONSTITUTION: The hydrolysis of nitrile of the formula; R-CN (R os 1W6C alkyl, alkenyl, or phenyl which may be substituted) as 2,3-diphenylpropionitrile in the presence of a base as alkali metal and/or hydrogen peroxide is effected using an organic quarternary ammonium salt and/or tertiary amine (tetra-n-butylammonium chloride, triethylamine) as a catalyst to produce amide derivative of the formula. The amounts of the base and hydrogen peroxide used are 0.1W2 and 2W3 moles per mol of the nitrile respectively.
