Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound in high yield without forming by-products, by photochlorination of α,α-dichloro-o-toluoyl chloride in the presence of a hexaalkylphosphoramide or tetraalkylurea.
CONSTITUTION: α,α-Dichloro-o-toluoyl chloride (formula IV) or its photochlorination product (formula III) is photochlorinated in the presence of 0.1W5wt% of a hexaalkylphosphoramide, e.g. hexamethylphosphoramide, or a tetraalkylurea, e.g. tetramethylurea, in the absence or presence of a solvent, e.g. CCl4, at 50W200°C, preferably 110W140°C, to give α,α,α,-trichloro-o-toluoyl chloride (formula I). The formation of the compound (formula II)which is a main photochlorination product of the compound of formula IV can be suppressed by the hexaalkylphosphoramide to give only the objective compound of formula I.
