Abstract
PURPOSE:To widen the dynamic range of an automatic gain control system by employing an avalanche photodiode (APD) for receiving a light input signal and the output of the APD for receiving the direct current light of a standard light source. CONSTITUTION:A light input signal is applied to an avalanche photodiode 11, and the output of the diode 11 is amplified by an amplifier 12 and then superimposed with the DC bias voltage of an avalanche photodiode 13. A direct current standard light is irradiated from a standard light surface 15 to the photodiode 13. The output of the amplifier 14 is detected in peak value by a peak value detector 16, the output of the detector 16 is compared with the standard voltage by a differential amplifier 17, which produces an error voltage for controlling the drive current of the standard light source 15 through a transistor 18 and the direct current bias voltage of the photodiode 13 through a DC/DC converter 19. The direct current bias voltage of the photodiode 17 is simultaneously controlled by the error voltage of the output of the amplifier 17.
