Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce easily and economically a flexible foam having an open cell structure from a crosslinked thermoplastic resin foam having a closed cell structure, by heating the resin foam having a closed cell structure by contacting it with a water-based heating medium.
CONSTITUTION: A crosslinked thermoplastic resin foam prepared by the use of a heat-decomposable blowing agent, is heated by contacting the resin foam with a water-based heating medium. The temperature of the heating medium is preferably 80°C or higher, and the time of contact with the heating medium is preferably set within the range of 0.1W30min. Examples of the heat-decomposable blowing agent include azodicarbonamide and 4, 4'-oxybis(benzenesulfonylmincarbazide). The heating medium can be water itself or water containing a water-soluble compound which elevates the boiling point of the solution, such as polyethylene glycol or glycol.
