Abstract
PURPOSE: The bulk polymerization of methyl metharylate monomer is conducted using a plug flow type reactor after the polymer content attains a specific level by bulk polymerization, thus producing title polymer having high polymer content, sharp molecular weight distribution and high heat distortion temperature.
CONSTITUTION: In the bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate monomer or a mixture consisting of more than 80 wt% of methyl methacrylate monomer and less than 20 wt% of other vinyl monomers compolymerizable, first a uniformly stirring mixer type reactor is employed and the polymerization is carried out at 120W200°C until the polymer content reaches 30W80 wt%. Then a plug flow type reactor is employed and the polymerization is conducted at 120W200°C until the final polymer content attains more than 90 wt%, preferably at 130W190°C until the polymer content reaches more than 92 wt%. The plug flow type reactor is, e.g., blade type reactor, drum type reactor or pipe type reactor.
