Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a resin composition whose heat resistance is improved without detriment to the properties inherent in methacrylate resins, by copolymerizing a methyl methacrylate monomer or a prepolymer thereof, α-methylstyrene, styrene and maleic anhydride.
CONSTITUTION: A quaterpolymer is produced, for example, by a bulk polymerization process which comprises adding a polymerization catalyst such as azobisisobutyronitrile or lauroyl peroxide to a mixture consisting of 40W89wt% of methyl methacrylate or a prepolymer thereof, 1W20wt% of α-methylstyrene, 5W20wt% of styrene and 5W20wt% of maleic anhydride; heating the mixture to 50W150°C, pref., 65W100°C to produce a prepolymer; further adding a polymerization catalyst to this syruplike prepolymer; polymerizing the mixture at 50W90°C; and carrying out the post-polymerization at 100W160°C for 30W180min. The resin composition having excellent heat resistance, heat stability and improved mechanical properties and colorability of moldings can be produced in good productivity.
