Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce H2 and O2 with high energy efficiency in spite of low voids of porous β-Al2O3 used as a diaphragm, by carrying out electrolysis in a fused NaOH bath while supplying steam to the cathode chamber.
CONSTITUTION: H2 and O2 are produced by electrolysis in a cell using porous β-Al2O3 as a diaphragm and fused NaOH as an electrolytic bath while supplying steam to the cathode chamber. For example, when water is electrolyzed in a bath of 350°C using an α-Al2O3 diaphragm with an average pore diameter of 50 μ and a voids of 50% and a β-Al2O3 diaphragm with the same diameter and the same voids, the apparent specific resistance is 4.8Ωcm and 2.1Ωcm, respectively. By continuing the electrolysis over a long time, the former is partially broken but the latter is not changed at all.
