Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for stabilizers of organic compounds in a simple process in high yield, by reacting a hydroxybenzoate with an olefin in the presence of an alkanesulfonic acid.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroxybenzoate of formula I: (R1 is C1W18 alkyl group), e.g. methyl salicylate, is reacted an olefin, e.g. styrene, of formula II: (R2 is phenyl or nuclear substituted phenyl, or C1W16 alkyl group. R3 is H, methyl or ethyl group) in the presence of an alkanesulfonic acid, e.g. methanesulfonic acid, to give the objective compound of formula III: (m is 1 or 2; the groups of formula IV may be different when m is 2), e.g. methyl 5-α-methylbenzylsalicylate. The olefin may be an individual or a mixture.
