Claims (10)
- マルチプレックス駆動により動作する単純マトリクス型ドットマトリクス液晶表示素子であって、
対向して配置される第1および第2の透明基板と、
前記第1の透明基板の対向面側に配置され、全体として第1の方向に延在する複数の第1の透明電極と、
前記第2の透明基板の対向面側に配置され、全体として前記第1の方向と直交する方向に延在する複数の第2の透明電極と、
前記第1および第2の透明基板の対向面側に前記第1および第2の透明電極を覆うように配置される第1および第2の垂直配向膜と、
前記第1および第2の透明基板の対向面側に狭持して配置され、誘電率異方性が負でリターデーションが450nmより大きい液晶層と、
前記第1および第2の透明基板の対向面側とは反対側に配置される第1および第2の視角補償板と、
前記第1および第2の視角補償板の外側にクロスニコルで配置される第1および第2の偏光板と、
を含み、
前記第1および第2の垂直配向膜の少なくとも一方には、配向処理が施され、
電圧無印加時における前記液晶層の厚み方向中央に位置する液晶分子の配向方向は、前記第1の方向成分を含む第2の方向であり、
前記第1および第2の透明電極が前記液晶層を挟んで重なり合う画素は、前記第2の方向に直交する方向と交差する辺を2つ以上有し、
前記第1の透明電極の前記画素に対応する領域には、前記第1の方向成分を含む方向に延在する開口部を備え、
前記第1の偏光板または前記第2の偏光板のいずれかの吸収軸は、前記第2の方向に対して45°の方向に配置される液晶表示素子。 - 前記第1の方向は、前記第2の方向と同じ方向である請求項1記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記第1および第2の透明電極の形状は短冊状または鋸状であり、前記画素の形状は矩形状、「く」の字状またはV字状である請求項1または2記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記開口部の形状は、前記第1の透明電極の延在方向エッジと平行なエッジを有する矩形状、ないし「く」の字またはZ字状である請求項3記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記開口部の形状は、全体として前記第1の方向に延在し、屈曲部を1つ以上有する請求項1〜3いずれか1項記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記第1の透明電極の前記画素に対応する領域毎に、同一形状の複数の前記開口部が配置される請求項1〜5いずれか1項記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記第1の視角補償板は、負の二軸光学異方性を有する視角補償板であって、前記第1の視角補償板の遅相軸は、隣接する前記第1の偏光板の吸収軸と直交し、かつ、前記第2の方向と約45°をなす請求項1〜6いずれか1項記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記第1および第2の視角補償板は、負の二軸光学異方性を有する視角補償板であって、前記第1および第2の視角補償板の面内遅相軸は互いに直交し、隣接する前記第1および第2の偏光板の吸収軸とも直交し、かつ、前記第2の方向とそれぞれ約45°をなす請求項1〜6いずれか1項記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記第1および第2の視角補償板の厚さ方向位相差は、前記液晶層のリターデーションの0.5〜1倍である請求項1〜8いずれか1項記載の液晶表示素子。
- さらに、前記第1および第2の透明基板の少なくとも一方には、前記第1の透明電極間、前記第2の透明電極間および前記開口部を塞ぐようにブラックマスクが形成される請求項1〜9いずれか1項記載の液晶表示素子。
