従来から使用されている油性グラビアインキに対して、水性グラビアインキの場合、印刷における作業環境を大幅に改善できる特徴があることから、今後のグラビア印刷は、水性グラビアインキ使用の方向に向かうものと思われる。

従来からの油性クラビア印刷機においては、図3に示すようにそのファニッシャーロール2は、版胴3に対してドクターナイフ5の反対側に配置されていて、インキパン1内のインキ4を単一のファニッシャーロール2により汲み上げて版面3aに供給している。図3において、6は圧胴、7は被印刷フィルムである。

また、油性グラビアインキを用いてグラビア印刷をする場合には、上記問題は発生しないが、フィルム7にインキを転写したあとの版面3aの乾きに対して版詰り等の問題がある為に、早くインキパン1からインキ4を版胴3に汲み上げる必要があり、このために、ナイフエッジ5とは反対側にファニッシャーロール2を配置している。しかし、版胴3をより高速化したとき、遠心力とインキ4の重力により、版胴3の版面3aからインキ4が落下したり、飛び散るようになるため、油性グラビアインキを用いる場合でも版胴3の高速化(印刷速度のアップ)に限界があった。
