図1は、本実施形態に係る内燃機関1の吸気系及び排気系の概略構成を示す図である。内燃機関1は車両駆動用のガソリン機関である。ただし、内燃機関1はディーゼル機関であってもよい。内燃機関1には排気通路2が接続されている。排気通路2には、三元触媒31を担持したパティキュレートフィルタ3(以下、フィルタ3という。)が設けられている。フィルタ3は、排気中のPMを捕集するウォールフロー型のフィルタであり、フィルタ3の隔壁に形成された細孔を排気が通過するときに排気中のPMが捕集される。

- 内燃機関の排気通路に設けられ酸素吸蔵能力を有する触媒を担持したパティキュレートフィルタと、
前記パティキュレートフィルタよりも下流の排気の空燃比を検出する空燃比検出手段と、
前記パティキュレートフィルタに流入する排気の空燃比を変化させる空燃比制御手段と、
前記パティキュレートフィルタの隔壁内に堆積している粒子状物質の量が所定量以下であるか否か判定する堆積判定手段と、
前記パティキュレートフィルタの隔壁内に堆積している粒子状物質の量が所定量以下である場合に、前記空燃比制御手段により排気の空燃比を変化させたときの前記空燃比検出手段により得られる排気の空燃比の変化から、前記触媒の最大酸素吸蔵量を推定する吸蔵量推定手段と、
