従来、室内用壁材としては古くから土壁があり、最近になっては繊維屑をバインダーで固める壁材が主流を成している。繊維類としてはワラ、紙類、パルプ、または化学繊維類などで、一定の繊維長を含むものが基本となっている。壁材には塗布作業時前後に一定の条件が求められる。すなわち、コテに載せた時、適当な粘度があり、かつ塗り付け作業時は伸びが良く、ムラになりにくいことである。これらの特性は繊維間の絡み、および構成成分の分子表面と水分子との相互作用の強さが複雑に関与する結果と考えられる。したがって、使用時の水の量は重要で、その使いやすさは繊維長の絡み具合と水の量で調整されているのが現状である。たとえば、加える水の添加量が多すぎると乾燥時間や垂れ現象などの問題があり、また逆に水分量が少なすぎると基材への塗り広げが困難となるなど、いずれも使い勝手の良い適度な水量を調整の重要さがわかる。このようなことが一因となって、木粉や繊維長の短すぎるものを多量用いる壁類は市販には見受けられない。特に木粉の場合、従来法と遜色ない製品仕上げをするためには壁材に適した粘度調整が重要と思われる。Conventionally, there has been a soil wall as an indoor wall material, and recently, a wall material in which fiber waste is hardened with a binder has become mainstream. 近年、住宅建設分野では環境衛生が重要な課題となって天然指向の機運が高まっている。古来より日本の風土にあった木質利用への期待は大きい。そこで、従来の壁材の原料に木粉を用いるにあたっては、まず上述のような問題点を克服すことが重要となる。すなわち、木粉の場合、紙やパルプ類に比べて繊維の絡みが少ないため壁塗り作業に適した粘度調整が難しい。そのため、施工直前の壁材に適度の増粘効果を与え、かつ塗布動作でその粘度が低下するようなレオロジー的変化を与えれば、塗布性に優れ、また吹き付け塗布も可能となる。このような原理は食品分野で盛んに利用されている。その最も身近な例はマヨネーズ製品である。この中に増粘性多糖類入れることでチューブを抑える動作でマヨネーズの流動特性が上がり、さらに押し出された後、元の粘性状態に戻ってそのままの形状が保持される現象である。この類似の現象を塗り壁材にも再現させることが最大の課題となる。In recent years, environmental hygiene has become an important issue in the housing construction field, and natural-oriented momentum has increased.
