Abstract

The holographic switching system is used in a telephone communication system for interconnecting incoming and outgoing telephone lines and is coupled to the incoming lines to provide a number of optical signals. It converts incoming electrical telephone signals which are modulated by information, into intensity modulated optical signals which are coupled to the incoming line. The electrical selector signals arriving with the incoming lines are converted into a space phase modulation of the optical signals in a direction transverse to the direction of propagation of the optical signals. A holographic plate with a number of holographic images is provided. Each image represents a different outgoing telephone line. The selector signal recoverts the optical signals to be transmitted along the outgoing telephone lines.
