Description

A hinge 1 for a tilt and turn window system comprises a pair of hinge members 2,3 connected by a hinge pin 4 for pivotal movement about mutually perpendicular axes in turn and tilt modes respectively. The hinge pin 4 is a sliding fit in a bore 7 of one hinge member 3 and a grub screw 11 mounted in the bore 7 is adjustable lengthwise of the bore 7 for axially adjusting the relative position of the hinge members 2,3.
Figure 1.
CO CM CM σ> LU -1HINGE inv' sntion relates to an improved hinge turn system for windows and like closures.
In a tilt and turn window system, the casement is mounted on an outer frame for pivotal movement about a first, generally vertical, axis for operation in the turn mode and about a second, generally horizontal, axis for operation in the tilt mode.
The combination of hinges for operation in the tilt and turn modes is selected by a drive mechanism extending around the peripheral edge of the casement and operable by a control handle..
A problem for installation of turn and tilt window systems is to ensure accurate alignment of the casement relative to the outer frame for correct operation and weathertight sealing when closed.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hinge for a tilt and turn system for windows and like closures which provides for adjustment of the casement relative to the outer frame.
According to the present invention we provide a hinge for a tilt and turn system for windows and like closures comprising a first hinge member for mounting on an opening frame, a second hinge member for mounting on an outer frame, a hinge pin connecting the hinge members for pivotal movement about two mutually perpendicular axes in tilt and turn modes of operation respectively, and adjuster means for relatively moving the hinge members in ί— OP· ? SECTION 28 ANO RULE 23 JNL. No......OF /(^/^3 ί> the direction of the longitudinal axis of the hinge pin.
Preferably, the hinge pin is axially located relative to one hinge member and axially slidable relative to the other hinge member.
Conveniently, opposed ends of the hinge pin are received in respective bores of the hinge members and the hinge pin has an external flange intermediate the ends for axially locating the hinge pin relative to to said one hinge member.
Advantageously, the hinge pin is engageable with the adjuster means within the bore of said other member and the adjuster means is movable lengthwise of the bore for axially sliding the hinge pin relative to said other hinge member.
Preferably, the adjuster means comprises an externally threaded element engageable with an internally threaded region of the bore in said other hinge element.
Conveniently, the element has a drive formation for engagement by a tool inserted into the bore from the end remote from the hinge pin for rotating the element.
The invention will now be described in more detail by way of example only with reference to the accomapnying drawings, wherein :FIGURE 1 is a vertical section through a hinge according to the invention showing a first end position of adjustment; FIGURE 2 is a vertical section similar to Figure 1 showing a second end position of adjustment; and FIGURE 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The hinge 1 shown in the drawings comprises a base plate 2 and a. frame plate 3 connected by a hinge pin 4.
The hinge pin 4 has a cylindrical centre portion 5 and tapered end portions 6.
The centre portion 5 is a sliding fit in a cylindrical bore 7 of the frame plate 3.
A knurled region 8 of the centre portion 7 serves to locate the hinge pin 4 in the bore 7 for assembly purposes without restricting axial sliding movement for adjustment purposes as described later herein.
A projecting outer end of the hinge pin 4 is a clearance fit in an aligned bore 9 of the base plate 2 and is axially located by an external annular flange 10 formed on the centre portion 5.
Mounted in the bore 7 of the frame plate 3 is a grub screw 11 engaging a threaded centre region 12 of the bore 7. The inner end of the hinge pin 4 seats against one end of the grub screw 11 within the bore 7.
The other end of the grub screw 11 is formed with a hexagonal socket (not shown) to receive an alien key 12 inserted into the opposite end of the bore 7 remote from the hinge pin 4 through an aligned bore 13 in the base plate 2.
The frame plate 3 and hinge pin 4 are relatively movable in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the hinge pin 4 by rotating the grub screw 11 to displace the frame plate 3 relative to the base plate 2 between two extreme end positions of adjustment as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
In use of the hinge 1 in a tilt and turn window system for mounting a casement on an outer frame, the base plate 2 is secured to an upright member of the outer frame (not shown) adjacent to a corner by means of screws (not shown) or like releasable fastenings received in countersunk holes 14 formed in a centre region 15 of the base plate 2.
The frame plate 3 is secured to an upright member of the casement (not shown) by means of screws (not shown) or like releasable fastenings received in countersunk holes 16 formed in an attachment flange 17.
In this embodiment, the hinge 1 is adapted for use with a casement constructed from an extrusion of metal or plastics having a re-entrant channel-section groove in which a mounting block 18 is slidably received and the flange 17 is screwed to the block 18 to clamp the frame plate 3 to the casement. This is not essential, however, and the flange 17 could be screwed direct to the casement or secured by any other suitable means.
The hinge pin 4 connects the frame and base plates 2,3 for pivotal movement of the casement relative to the outer frame about the longitudinal axis of the hinge pin 4 in a turn mode of operation and the tapered end portion 6 of the hinge pin 4 received in the bore 9 of the base plate 2 permits limited pivotal movement of the casement relative to the outer frame about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis in a tilt mode of operation.
In addition, the casement can be raised and lowered relative to the outer frame for aligning the casement in the frame by rotating the grub screw 11 to move the frame plate 3 axially relative to the hinge pin 4. In general, an adjustment range of - 2mm is found sufficient for most applications, but it will be understood that any desired range of adjustment could be provided for.
