Abstract
4,6 - Dimethyl - 2 - sulphanilamidopyrimidine (sulphadimidine) is purified by adding to a filtered, decolourized aqueous solution of the crude product (synthesized by known methods and subsequently separated as the sodium salt by addition to the reaction mixture of dilute sodium hydroxide) sodium hydroxide until a sodium hydroxide concentration of 21-22% is attained, followed by cooling to precipitate substantially completely sodium sulphadimidine, which is then separated, dissolved in water, decolourized and treated with mineral acid to precipitate the desired product.
