Abstract
A process for the purification of argon and helium gas containing moisture, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen and possibly hydrocarbons comprises subjecting the contaminated gas to a compression step and thereafter to the following steps: (a) one in which the gas is treated by a gettering agent selected from the group consisting of copper oxide, tantalum and zirconium and operating at a temperature appropriate to remove hydrogen (and also hydrocarbons if present) from the gas, (b) a step in which the gas is treated by a gettering agent selected from the group consisting of calcium, copper, molybdenum, tantalum and zirconium and operating at a temperature appropriate for removal of oxygen from the gas, and (c) a step in which the gas is subjected to treatment by a gettering agent selected from the group consisting of tantalum, titanium, uranium and zirconium operating at a temperature appropriate for removal of nitrogen from the gas, and (d) drying the gas. If desired, the gas may be filtered prior to compression and recirculated if necessary. Apparatus useful for effecting such a process may comprise a compressor, three furnaces containing the appropriate gettering agent and a dryer in series. Specification 895,486 is referred to.
