Abstract

Carbon dioxide is removed from mixtures thereof with nitrogen by compressing the mixture to 10-15 bars, scrubbing with water (which may suitably be heated), and then drying the effluent stream and removing further carbon dioxide by passing the mixture over an adsorbent, e.g. silica gel, alumina, active carbon or a molecular sieve. The gas purified may be further purified by passage over active carbon. The drying adsorbent may be regenerated with refined gas recycled from the first adsorption purification stage, while the active carbon in the optional second adsorption/purification stage may be regenerated either by heating or by vacuum treatment. In preferred embodiments, two towers are provided for each of the adsorption/purification stages, one in each stage being in use while the other is being regenerated.
