Abstract
961,233. Pipe couplings. J. S. & F. FOLKARD Ltd. Oct. 29, 1962 [Dec. 19, 1961], No. 45486/61. Heading F2G. A detachable joint between pipe members includes a socket sleeve on a first member, a socket engaging spigot on the second member, the spigot having a flange composed of a split ring keyed to the spigot and an associated clamping ring, and a spigot encircling union member detachably connected with the socket sleeve and incorporating an abutment surface which exerts axial pressure on the clamping ring so as to cause the latter to close the split ring on the socket and so as to maintan the spigot firmly home in the socket. The flange is formed on the pipe end or spigot 1 by fitting over it the two halves of a split ring 12 of which the outer periphery tapers outwards towards the end of the spigot and the inner periphery is ribbed to correspond with grooves 11 cut in the outer periphery of the spigot, and by fitting over the ring 12 a complete ring 14 of complementary inner tapes and with an outside diameter approximating to the inside diameter of the mouth 5 of the socket 3. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the socket 3 has an external screw thread on to which the union member 8 is adapted to be screwed and its abutment surface, which is the end of an inturned and returned rim 9 slidable on the spigot 1, presses against the end of the flange through the intermediary of a flexible sealing ring 15 and a washer 16. The flange may alternatively be formed of a single split ring of a trapezium cross-section with the base of the trapezium ribbed to fit grooves in the spigot and the annular shoulder corresponding to 6 suitably tapered, as is the abutting end of the sealing ring corresponding to 15, the two halves of the split ring being held together by a retaining ring which fits in a suitable groove. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the socket 3 has a flange 21 and the union member is adapted to be tightened against by having a corresponding flange 22 which is bolted to the socket flange. Fig. 5 also shows an alternative sealing device in which inner and outer axially displaced 0-rings are carried in grooves in a ring which is composed of two parts screwed together. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, tolerance variations in the diameter of the pipe 25 are provided for by giving an inward taper 30 to part of the internal surface of the mouth 29 of the socket 27. A clamping ring 37 which retains the two halves of a split ring 34, forming the flange, is tapered to co-operate with the surface 30, so keying together the rings 34, 37. The split ring 34 has an annular recess 36 for a rib 38 on the clamping ring 37. The end of the pipe 25 is countersunk to correspond with a sloping shoulder 32 in the socket.
