Abstract
1,146,453. Pipe couplings. K. GARBISLANDER, and K. BENGESSER. 25 Aug., 1967 [29 Aug., 1966], No. 39212/67. Heading F2G. A coupling for connecting pipes 1 and 11 of metal or plastics, such as polyvinylchloride, polypropylene or polyethylene, comprises two threadedly-interengaged collars 2 and 3, one being firmly connected to pipe 1<SP>1</SP> and the other receiving pipe 1, a tiltable metal, rubber or plastics ring 4 provided in a recess defined between the collars and engageable with a shoulder 7 to cause tilting of the ring into clamping engagement with pipe 1, and a packing ring 5 disposed in a recess in one of the collars. As shown, the resilient packing-ring 5 is defined in an annular recess 6 in collar 2, the said recess having oppositely tapered walls 10 and 11 so that after initial compression of the ring on insertion of pipe 1, the resiliency of the ring partially withdraws the pipe which carries the clamping ring 4 with it until the clamping ring is tilted by shoulder 7 to clamp the pipe. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the packing ring is disposed in a recess in the collar 3. In this case, the provision of a sealing ring 14 between the collars is unnecessary. The inner periphery of the tiltable clamping ring is tapered and may be castellated as well, Fig. 4 (not shown).
