Abstract

966,870. Automatic temperature control. BELL AEROSPACE CORPORATION. Feb. 22,1961 [Feb. 23, 1960], No. 6540/61. Heading G3R. In an automatic temperature control system wherein the heater circuit comprises a resistive heater, a heater power source and a heater power control, the resistance of the heater is independently measured by means of an isolated circuit and the energization of the heater is varied so as to maintain substantially constant temperature in the heater. As shown, the heater circuit comprises a D.C.power source 1, a power control 3, an A. C. isolation means 4 and a resistive heater 2. The resistance of the heater 2 is measured independently by an isolated circuit comprising D.C. isolation means 11, an A.C. voltage source 12, and a computer 13 which computes any difference between the heater resistance and a preselected reference resistance and relays the error signal to to the power control 3 which varies the energization of the heater 2 to reduce the resistance difference to zero. The A.C. power in the measuring circuit is blocked from the heater circuit by the A.C. isolation means 4; similarly, the D.C. power in the heater circuit is blocked from the measuring circuit by the D.C. isolation means 11. The heater power source may be A.C., and the measuring power source D.C. (Fig.2, not shown); also, the heater power source may be A.C. of one frequency and the measuring power source A.C. of a second frequency (Fig.3, not shown), or the system may include time-sharing electrical energy of the circuits through the heater (Fig.4, not shown). The system may be applied to resistance cooling devices such as Peltier junctions.
