Abstract
950,953. Laminates. B.X. PLASTICS Ltd. June 2, 1960 [March 26, 1959], No. 10680/59. Heading B5N. [Also in Division H5] A heating element, for example for protecting sports fields or for horticultural use, comprises a multi-apertured electrically conductive metallic lamina having means for passing electric current therethrough and disposed between two laminµ of synthetic plastomeric thermoplastic material, which laminae are flexible at or around 0 ‹ C. and are laminated to one another between the apertures in the metallic lamina. Suitable synthetic thermoplastic materials are polyethylene of low density, and nylon. Suitable metallic materials are aluminium, and copper and alloys thereof. The metallic lamina may have a unitary structure or it may be a woven or knitted material, e.g. a gauze. The apertures may be of any shape, e.g. circular, square, hexagonal. The means for connecting the metallic lamina to a source of current may consist of tongues or wires connected to the metallic lamina or tongued extensions of the metallic lamina, positioned at either end of the said lamina. In an alternative construction the metallic lamina and the under-lying layer of thermoplastic protrude from the assembly at either end thereof, and metal bars adapted to be connected to a source of low voltage current may be clamped on each side of the protrusions. The heating element may be strengthened by laminating to one side thereof a sheet of relatively non-stretchable fabric such as a textile scrim, or glass fibre fabric and on top of the fabric a further lamina of thermoplastic material. The heating element may be manufactured by introducing the various layers disposed above one another in the appropriate order into the nip of a heated pair of rollers to effect lamination.
