Abstract

In the preparation of polyesters by the polymerization of a cyclic ester of lactic acid in the absence of molecular oxygen and initiator, there is used as a catalyst an organo-tin compound. Substances containing alcoholic hydroxyl groups, e.g. methyl lactite, may be used as chain-breakers. In the examples, lactide was polymerized in the presence of tin tetraphenyl to produce polyesters soluble in benzene, chloroform and acetone.
