Abstract

A quilt is made by covering a thin elastic sheet, having a matt or roughened surface, with a layer of carded fibres, covering said layer with a similar thin sheet, covering said thin sheets with fabric sheets, and stitching along parallel lines through the assembly. Apparatus for making the quilt comprises a machine for weighing a required quantity of fibre, a machine for carding the fibre and delivering it transversely to an elastic sheet drawn from a roll and supported on an initially stationary conveyor belt, the latter then moving to enclose said layer by a second thin elastic sheet drawn from a second roll, the elastic sheets and the enclosed fibre then passing between a pair of rolls of fabric to be covered thereby, and the assembly then passing to a multi-needle sewing machine.
