Abstract

920,174. Coloured glass compositions. UNITED GLASS Ltd. May 18, 1961 [July 11, 1960], No. 24139/60. Class 56. For the continuous manufacture of homogeneously coloured glass by the addition of a colouring agent to molten base glass, the colouring agent is a glass having a viscosity less than 400 poises at 1100‹ C. The viscosity may be less than 100 poises at 1100‹ C. The colouring glass given is, in percentages by weight, Na2O, K2O and/or Li2O 20 to 40; SiO2 30 to 60; B2O3 and/or PbO 5 to 35 together with colouring material, metal oxides 5 to 15 or Se with or without arsenic oxide up to 3. Examples are given. Metal oxides suggested are Co, Cr, Ni, V, Fe and Mn. Base glasses of (1) soda-lime, (2) potash lead and (3) fluoride soda-lime glasses are also given, the ranges being (1) Na2O 12 to 16; CaO 9 to 13; Al2O3 0 to 2; SiO2 70 to 75; (2) PbO 30 to 35; SiO2 50 to 55; K2O 10 to 15 and (3) as (1) with in addition F 2 to 6. Up to 5% may be added of the oxides of Mg, Ba, B and K.
