Abstract
817,636. Glass composition for glass to metal seals. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 14, 1957 [May 14, 1956], No. 14977/56. Class 56. A glass for sealing to a high thermal expansion metal or alloy has a composition in the ranges, in percentages by weight, of Si 32-50; Na2O 4-27; K2O 4-27; Li 2 O 0-5; BaO 2-8; SrO 2-8; TiO 2 4-30; ZnO 0-7 ; ZrO 0-2 ; Al2O3 0-2 ; the total alkali metal oxides 29-33 ; the total alakine earth metal oxides 4-16 ; the total TiO2 + ZnO at least 11; and the total SiO2 + TiO2 not less than 46. A number of specific examples are given. Not more than 1 per cent. of colouring material consisting of at least one of the oxides of Mn, Cr, Ni, V, W, Fe, Cu, Co may be substituted for an equal weight of silica. The composition may also be used for foaming sintered glass beads, by dragading, reducing to powder, mixing with a binder and drying for at least 24 hours. The dried powder is then granulated and compacted under pressure in a mould.
