Abstract

910,280. Electric heating panels. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1961 [March 9, 1960], No. 6187/61. Class 39 (3). In a method of inserting a sheathed electric heating element into a multidirectional conduit 15, formed, for example, between two metal plates by welding them together in a known manner, one free end of the heating element 20 passes through tube 10 into one end 17 of the conduit, inclined to the tube 10 and connected thereto is a side tube 8 through which is directed a pulsating stream of fluid-e.g. air, water, steam, which passes over and past the element in unobstructed flow through the conduit whereby the element is caused to pass through the conduit until its free end 22 emerges at end 16 of the conduit. In an alternative arrangement the pulsating fluid is applied through nozzle 23 in the wall of housing 19 in which the heating element is initially located, and the side tube 8 is dispensed with. The conduit may have any desired cross-sectional shape but the heating element must be of such diameter that it is freely movable within the conduit. A preferred form of heating wire consists of a nickel-dichrome alloy wire wound on an asbestos core and covered in an electrically insulating but heat-conducting silicone rubber sheath. The heating apparatus may be used as a skirting board heater, or an evaporator plate for use in defrosting refrigerators. Specification 759,804 is referred to.
