Abstract
917,648. Valves. HARTUNG, W. Sept. 20, 1960 [Sept. 21, 1959], No. 32244/60. Class 135. A main valve controlled by auxiliary valves which are under the control of a meter whereby a preselected quantity of fluid can be discharged is provided with pressure-responsive elements that allow closure of the main valve in two stages to prevent shocks in the fluid conduits. As shown, a main valve 3 is held open, against the loading of a spring 27 and the net upward force of pressure from a conduit 11 acting in a chamber 9 on a diaphragm 4 and a piston 7, by pressure admitted through an adjustable throttle 26 and an auxiliary valve 14 to a chamber 12 above the piston 7. When a predetermined portion of the preselected quantity of fluid has been passed by the main valve an electromagnet 25 under the control of the meter operates the auxiliary valve 14 to vent the chamber 12 through an adjustable throttle 29, whereupon the main valve will close to an extent determined by a stop 19 which carries an adjustable nut 21 and is urged downwardly by pressure in a chamber 18 above a piston 16. When the main valve has delivered the complete quantity of fluid an auxiliary valve 23 is actuated by an electromagnet 25 under the control of the meter to vent the chamber 18 and allow the main valve to close. The auxiliary valves 14, 23 may be operated mechanically instead of by electromagnets. The pressure chamber 9 may be dispensed with, or the supply of pressure fluid to it may be controlled by a further auxiliary valve which provides for venting during the opening movement of the main valve. In a modification, the stop 19, piston 16 and auxiliary valve 23 are omitted. In this case the main valve is fully open when the chamber 12 is pressurized and the chamber 9 vented, takes up its intermediate position when the chamber 9 is pressurized, and closes when the chamber 12 is vented.
