Abstract

899,790. Regulating tyre pressures. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Jan. 5, 1961 [Jan. 5, 1960], No. 572/61. Class 144 (2). In an arrangement for controlling the tyre pressures of a vehicle in motion wherein each tyre 11 is connected via a three-way cock 19 to a supply pipe 18, containing air at a pressure which is regulated according to vehicle speed and/or load by control means 38-4, the said cock 19 is automatically moved at predetermined time intervals to place the tyre in communication with the pipe 18 for a short time to maintain the tyre at the desired pressure. As shown, the operating lever 21 of the cock 19 is actuated against a return spring 22 by a solenoid 26 periodically energized by a time-switch 33 which is electrically driven through the vehicle ignition circuit. Alternatively the time intervals could be determined by an apparatus operated in accordance with the distance travelled by the vehicle. Fig. 2 shows the non-return valve 13 fitted to the tyre 11. The valve 13 comprises a stepped piston 45 operating in a stepped housing 52 with its small diameter end actuating the stem 47 of a valve head 48 sealing the tyre chamber 12 from the valve housing. The piston has an air passage 46 therethrough and its large diameter end is acted upon by the pressure prevailing in the pipe 17 connecting the valve to the cock 19. Normally the pipe 17 is vented to atmosphere by the cock 19 but when the cock 19 is actuated to connect the pipes 17 and 18, the pressure in pipe 18 acts on the large diameter piston end to raise the valve 48 against its spring 50 and the tyre pressure even though the latter may be greater than that prevailing in pipe 18. Equalization of pressure then occurs in the tyre and the pipe 18 via the passage 46, and when the cock 19 is restored to vent the pipe 17 the valve 48 is reseated to seal the tyre.
