Abstract

907,542. Stuffing-boxes and piston packing. DOWTY SEALS Ltd. Nov. 21, 1960 [Nov. 20, 1959], No. 39528/59. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A sealing ring, for use between relatively slidable parts having respectively an annular recess 22 to house the sealing ring and a cylindrical surface 27, comprises a base 10 adapted to seat against a shoulder 23 at one end of the recess 22, and a lip 11 extending axially from the base and having an end profile with a radially outermost sealing edge 16 for engagement with the surface 27 and a circular projection or series of projections 18 set back radially from but extending axially beyond the edge 16 for engagement with a retaining wall 25 of the recess opposite the shoulder 23. As shown, the ring is provided with similar lips 11, 12. The lip 12 may terminate at the line A-B and may, for example, be used to form a static seal with the surface 24 of a piston sliding in a cylinder. The projections 18, 19 may be in the form of ribs of triangular cross-section and may be discontinuous or they may be formed as a series of pimples to provide fluid communication between the clearance 26 and the recess 22.
