A process for the " on glaze " decoration of china comprises covering that part of the surface which is to be kept free of decoration with a resinous film, applying paint containing lustre Colours or precious metal over that part of the surface to be decorated and at least over the edges of the surrounding film and subjecting the surface to firing temperatures. The film may be applied as a resin/solvent solution, the solvent being allowed to evaporate after application, or a previously formed film may be attached to the surface with size or gum arabic. Alternatively, a film may be applied to the usual " cover coat transfers," or screen printing techniques may be used in which case the paper is split after printing and the film transfer applied to the surface with an adhesive, then the backing paper is washed off leaving the film adhering to the surface, The precious metal or lustre colours are applied as paints or varnishes optionally using a flux, e.g. bismuth flux.
