Abstract

907,064. Milking machines. WESTFALIA SEPARATOR A.G. Feb. 23, 1961 [May 12, 1960], No. 6671/61. Class 5(1). A milking installation having the source of vacuum connected to the milk collecting conduit through a churn battery is provided with a device arranged between the ends of the vacuum conduit 1 and the milk collecting conduit 2 for maintaining the negative pressure at the end of the conduit 2 constant. The device comprises a diaphragm 4 subjected on its underside to the negative pressure at the conduit 2 and on its upper side to atmospheric pressure acting through an opening 5. The pressure difference causes the diaphragm 4 and a plunger 8 carried by it to move downwardly against the action of a spring 9 so that a slider 10 attached to the plunger uncovers an opening 11 to allow air to enter the vacuum conduit until the desired negative pressure at the conduit 2 is reached. Before the commencement of milking the device is set to the required negative pressure by regulating the loading of the spring 9 by means of a nut 13. In a modification the diaphragm 4 and plunger 8 are replaced by a cylinder and piston.
