Abstract

Class 7 (ii) [Also in Group XXVIII] In an ancillary pressure controlling device for use in connection with the crankcase of a compressor or internal-combustion engine, there is provided a breather pipe 11, extending from the crankcase and forming the sole connection between the crankcase and atmosphere, which has an inner frame member 18 of downwardly opening cup shape adapted to slidingly connect into the upper end thereof, there being arranged an annular series of openings 28 through the frame member 18, a flexible valve disc 29 overlying the openings on the upper face of the frame member and suitable fastening elements, such as nut 34 and bolt 30, securing the centre of the valve to the frame member, the latter being adapted to substantially completely close off the crankcase from atmosphere when the valve closes the openings. The breather pipe 11 is provided with a combined filter and valve unit 10 which comprises a cover 16 within which is the frame member 18 with a series of holes 26 near its upper end. A plate 27 is disposed across the member 18 just below the openings 26 which plate incorporates the openings 28 that are normally covered by the valve disc 29 of rubber-like material. The plate 27 is peripherally supported from the member 18 by welding, the valve clamping nut 34 and bolt 30 passing through and being tightened against the cover 16 by a wing nut 35, the removal of which nut allows removal of the cover 16 for servicing of the wire mesh filter 19 located between the cover 16 and member 18. Bleed holes 37 or 38 may be provided, the former through the valve disc 29 and the latter in the walls of member 18. When a piston moves towards the crankcase a slight air pressure therein acts through holes 28 and lifts valve disc 29, the air passing to atmosphere by openings 26, filter 19 and annular opening 36; the valve closes upon the outstroke of the piston thereby maintaining a slight vacuum in the crankcase. Whilst the apparatus is illustrated as communicating with atmosphere by opening 36 it may also be used when the pipe 11 is connected to a source of suction or alternate pressure and suction through opening 36.
