Abstract

A mineral oil composition for use as lubricants or hydraulic fluids resistant to oxidation at high temperatures comprises a major proportion of mineral oil and minor proportions each of (1) an oil-soluble aromatic amine (R)2NH, wherein the R's are the same or different aromatic radicals, and (2) an oil-soluble boron ester having the formula (R1O)3 B, wherein at least one R1 is a branched chain alkaryl radical and the other R1's are the same or different hydrocarbon radicals. The R-groups of additive (1) may be mono- or di-nuclear aromatic radicals, and the branched-chain alkaryl radical of additives (2) may contain two branched chain alkyl groups, which may be tertiary, alkyl groups. The additives mentioned are (1) diphenyldinaphthyl-, phenyl-alpha-naphthyl-, phenyl-beta-naphthylamines, and (2) 2, 6-ditert-butyl-4-methylp henyl-di-n-butyl borate, 2, 6-ditert-butyl phenyl di-n-butyl borate, 2, 6-ditert butyl-4-methyl phenyl di-n-octyl borate, 2, 6-ditert-butyl-4-methyl phenyl diphenyl borate, 2-ethyl hexyl phenyl dibutyl-borate. The mineral oils used, e.g. paraffinic, naphthenic, and mixed base mineral oils may contain substantial proportions of aromatics.
