Abstract

Dry carbon black is treated by oxidation by suspending the black in a stream of air in a reaction chamber and contacting at elevated temperature, e.g. 150 DEG -230 DEG C., with nitrogen dioxide. Carbon black to be treated in the <PICT:0895990/III/1> apparatus of Specification 895,991 is carried from supply hopper 48, by waste gases from the reaction and after-treatment chambers 41, 61 recycled through 46, to heat-insulated pretreatment chamber 42, which is maintained at 50 DEG -150 DEG C. and equipped with heater 58. The carbon black is withdrawn through 59, 57 to pipe 54, where it is mixed with a mixture of air and NO2 from mixer head 53, to which the waste gases from pre-treatment chamber 42 are also added by means of pipe 71 and fan 72. The resulting mixture enters reaction chamber 41 tangentially, and the carbon black passes through the common upper part 62 to after-treatment chamber 61 at 230 DEG -300 DEG C., while waste gases are withdrawn and recycled through 46. Hot air enters after-treatment chamber tangentially at 64 below open-ended tube 65, and carbon black is withdrawn through 63. Intermediate plates 70a and 70b may be provided in reaction chamber 41, and all chambers should taper at the lower ends and have conical bases. In Fig. 1 (not shown), a simple cylindrical heat-insulated reaction vessel is provided with a solid inlet at the top and outlet at the bottom, and with a recycle pipe, external to the vessel, connecting the gas outlet and inlet; a fan and gas mixer, together with an optional heater, are fitted in the recycle pipe.
