Abstract
Interpolymers of 50 to 99,8 weight per cent of a conjugated diene, 0 to 49,8 weight per cent of a monoalkenyl monomer copolymerizable with said diene, 0,1 to 10 weight per cent of an N-alkylol amide of an alpha, beta-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and 0,1 to 10 weight per cent of an alpha, beta-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof may be prepared by polymerizing a mixture of the monomers in aqueous dispersion at -30 DEG to 100 DEG C. to from 90 to 100% conversion. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, 1,3-dimethyl butadiene, 2-ethyl butadiene, hexadiene-1,3, 4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene, chloroprene, bromoprene and fluoroprene. Specified monoalkenyl compounds are styrene, vinyl toluenes and their alpha-methyl derivatives; vinyl xylenes; acrylic, methacrylic and ethacrylic acid esters and nitriles; vinylidene cyanide; vinyl and vinylidene halides; and vinyl and isopropenyl esters. Specified amides are N-methylol acrylamide, N-ethanol acrylamide, N-propanol acrylamide, N-methylol methacrylamide, N-ethanol methacrylamide, N-methylol maleimide, N-methylol maleamide, N-methylol maleamic acid, N-methylol maleamic acid esters and the N-methylol amides of vinyl aromatic acids such as N-methylol p-vinyl benzamide. Specified acids are acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, alphachloracrylic, maleic, fumaric, citraconic and sorbic acids and anhydrides. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of emulsifiers, e.g. alkali metal hydrocarbon sulphates and sulphonates, alkali metal sulphonates of dicarboxylic acid esters and amides, quaternary ammonium salts, polyether alcohols, fatty alkylolamine condensates and diglycol esters of fatty acids; catalysts, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, acyl peroxides, hydrocarbon hydroperoxides, peresters and alkali metal persulphates, optionally together with conventional redox activators, e.g. polyhydroxy phenols, sodium sulphite or bisulphite, dimethylaminopropionitrile, reducing sugars and heavy metal ions; modifiers, e.g. mercaptans; buffers; electrolyte salts and carbon black. The polymerization may be terminated by the addition of hydroquinone or phenyl-beta-naphthylamine. The latex obtained may be coagulated, or thickened, e.g. with casein, carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose or polyacrylic acid. The latices may be employed in finishing leather; binding, impregnating and coating textiles and paper; and in adhesive compositions, printing pastes and paints. The polymers are useful in the preparation of gloves, gaskets, foams, tyres, hose, shock absorbers, footwear and flooring.
