Abstract

878,194. Hydraulic presses. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Jan. 18, 1960 [Oct. 17, 1958], No. 33195/58. Class 69 (2). A pull-down type hydraulic press comprises a movable system consisting of a main upper crosshead 16, connected to an auxiliary lower crosshead 15 by columns 17 or other side members, a main hydraulic unit 10, 11 in the main vertical axis of the press for moving the system arranged between a stationary press base 12 and the lower cross beam, and auxiliary hydraulic units 21, 22 for lifting the system and for balancing the weight of the system, the auxiliary units being arranged on opposite sides of the main unit and each having a cylinder connected to the base and a ram connected to the frame or vice versa. The press base is arranged substantially at floor level so that all the hydraulic components are below that level. The columns 17 of the crossheads pass through the base and the tool 19 is pulled down on to the workpiece 18 by fluid supplied from a pipe 13 and valve 14 to the cylinder 10 of the main unit moving the ram 11 connected to the lower crosshead downwardly. The columns 17, of which there are four are partly or entirely hollow and contain the cylinders 21 of the auxiliary units, the rams 21 of which are secured to cross bars 26 rigidly connected to the base 12. The four auxiliary units are arranged symmetrically about the main unit, diagonally opposite units serving to balance the system while the remaining diagonally opposite units serve to return the crossheads to their upper position. In another embodiment, the upper crosshead is pulled down by fluidpressure supplied to a plurality of cylinders and the auxiliary units are disposed outside the columns with their cylinders secured to the press base and their rams connected to the lower crosshead.
