Abstract

863,557. Underwater cameras. DE WOUTERS D'OPLINTER, J.G.M.J. July 21, 1958, No. 23353/58. Classes 97(1) and 98(1) In an underwater camera, the objective assembly incorporates an objective mount arranged for axial adjustment in a lens tube and urged by resilient means towards a reference surface which is a fixed distance from a photosensitive surface, said distance being unaltered by deformation of the camera casing. The objective assembly shown is contained in a lens tube 2 which is screwed on to the external casing 1 of the camera body and the join is made fluid tight by means of rings 8 in the casing 1 and lens tube 2 which bear against a sleeve 9. The objective mount 16 is urged by a spring 33, positioned between a ring 21 and a collar 34 on said mount, against a reference surface comprising a ring 31. This ring is fixed to the tube 2 and not the casing 1 and forms the front face of a dark chamber which incorporates the photo-sensitive layer. The sleeve 9 is movable axially and rotatably relative to the tube 2. In the position shown a rod 10 on the sleeve 9 rests in a socket in a sleeve 14. An arm 18 on an extension of the tube 2 engages a groove 20 in a bush 14 and prevents it from rotating so that rotation of the sleeve 9 causes this bush 14 and the mount 16 to move axially by means of screw threads 17 thereby adjusting the focus of the objective. In the forward position of the sleeve 9 the arm 10 engages a notch in ring 21 a pin 26 of which moves in a circumferential slot 27 in a sleeve 22 and engages the objective mount 16. The sleeve 22 is coupled to a diaphragm ring 28 and the mount 16 by means of pin 29. Rotation of sleeve 9 therefore causes the mount 16 and diaphragm control ring 28 to rotate to alter the diaphragm aperture. Scales indicating the focus and aperture of the objective may be engraved on the lens tube 2 so that only the appropriate scale is uncovered for each of the controlling positions of sleeve 9.
