Abstract
859,114. Spray-producers. HESSION, J. W. July 9, 1957 [July 11, 1956], No. 21643/57. Class 69 (3). A portable atomizer has a housing 20 containing an electric motor 29 which drives a fan 30 whereby air is drawn into the housing through slots 32 and delivered to an atomizing nozzle assembly 33. Liquid is drawn from a tank 25, via a tube 35, into the nozzle assembly by the flow of air therethrough and sprayed. The assembly comprises a hollow annular body 54, Fig. 6, into which the liquid is drawn, closed at its rear end by a flexible diaphragm 61. A nose portion 56 extends into the throat of a Venturi tube 43, and has a liquid passage therethrough, the outlet of which is controlled by a valve 68 on a stem 70 attached to the diaphragm. A spring 75 normally closes the valve, but during spraying the air pressure on the rear of the diaphragm opens the valve and liquid is drawn into the Venturi tube where it is acted upon by a primary whirling air stream fed into the tube between circumferentiallv spaced vanes 52 within a stator member 50. The atomized particles flow along the diverging section of the tube towards the sharp edged opening 39 in an orifice plate 36 attached to the housing wall, and are acted upon by a secondary whirling air stream flowing between similar vanes 42 in a stator member 40. The two air streams whirl in opposite directions and the movement of the particles from the orifice is axial. Axial movement of the valve is limited by the abutment of a head 80 on a stem 76 with a screwed knob 77, and by rotating the knob this axial movement is adjusted. Toggle clamps interconnect the tank and housing; legs 83 on the housing base enable it to be supported independently and fed with liquid from a different source. In Fig. 12 a nozzle assembly support 85 is rotatably mounted in an opening in the housing, and the nozzle assembly has a modified mechanism for adjusting valve movement. A U-shaped member 89 is attached to the diaphragm 61 and a pin 90, which is eccentrically mounted between the shafts 91, 92, Fig. 13, passes through the member 89. The shafts are journalled in the nozzle support and by their rotation by a handle 95 the pin position is changed thereby controlling the movement of member 89 and its associated valve. In a further modification, the valve and its control are omitted, and the diaphragm is replaced by a solid wall, and the liquid flow is controlled by a valve in the feed line to the nozzle assembly.
