Abstract

1,101,782. Spray-producers. SOC. ANON. DE MACHINES ELECTROSTATIQUES. 23 June, 1965 [23 June, 1964], No. 26692/65. Heading B2F. A gun suitable for spraying a liquid or a powder fed to the spray head through a central conduit 8 comprises a duct 24 adapted to supply an atomizing stream of air to an annular outlet 66 surrounding the spray material outlet 50, and a duct 26 also connected to a compressed air supply and arranged to produce at an outlet 82 concentric with the outlet 66 a whirling air discharge whereby to control the spray characteristics. Tangential inlets 78 into a chamber 80 effect the whirling of the said discharge and similar inlet 62 into a chamber 64 may whirl the discharge from the outlet 66. The outlet 50 is generally annular, being defined by a guide or baffle 52, Fig. 4 (not shown) within the conduit 8. The spray material, e.g. paint or a plastics powder, within the conduit 8 is charged by a potential applied to a liner 68 via a conductive strip 70 and a spring 72. A trigger, Fig. 1 (not shown) controls the flow of spray material and air and a push button may be used to selectively cut off the air supply to the conduit 26 so as to decrease the transverse extent of the spray and increase its axial velocity. The air streams from the outlets 82 and 66 may be whirled in opposite directions. A lip or radial or helical vanes may be used adjacent the outlet 82 to improve the stability of the spray. Means may be provided for ionizing the air molecules in addition to, or instead of, the means described for charging the spray material. In the embodiment of Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) the spray material is discharged as a solid jet, the outlet being controlled by a needle valve. and the air fed by the duct 24 is discharged without whirling via holes in a conductive charging member.
