858,021. Pneumatic tyres. CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE A.G. Nov. 5, 1957 [March 22, 1957], No. 34418/57. Class 144 (2). A pneumatic tyre having a carcase of parallel cord plies 1 laid with the cords disposed in radial planes containing the tyre axis, or at a small angle not exceeding 15 degrees thereto, in which case adjacent plies are laid in crossrelation to each other, has a tread reinforcement comprising a band 3 of rubber or the like having embedded therein a random arrangement of fibres, threads or wires of natural or synthetic textile material or of metal, at least a major portion of the fibres &c. being of a length greater than textile dust and ranging from one or two mms. to one or two cms. The tyre may be built up as a flat band blank on a building drum with the carcase plies having either a conventional bead lap, or one which extends, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the ply ends overlap beneath the tread, the reinforcing band 3 being disposed in the band either above, between or below the carcase plies and below the tread 4. In the unvulcanized state the band 3 does not restrict the shaping of the tyre blank, but when vulcanized it resists circumferential and transverse stresses on the tyre tread.
