Abstract
809,808. Tanks. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Nov. 8, 1956 [Nov. 23, 1955], No. 34194/56. Class 69 (1). A liquid storage tank particularly adapted for storage of petroleum comprises a storage tank 10 which may be of concrete and built into the ground for external support, and an inner vertical shell 28 secured to and spaced from the tank wall 14 and having an annular chamber 48 formed at its lower edge, which chamber together with a vertical member 54 on the tank floor forms a liquid sealing trap. In use, water is introduced inside member 54 to about the level 58, and a sealing liquid of substantially the same density as the stored liquid is introduced between wall 14 and shell 28 so that it extends into the chamber 48 and takes up a level 64 substantially the same as the level 62 of the stored liquid; by this means contamination of the stored liquid by the concrete walls 14 is avoided. Both stored and sealing liquids must be insoluble in water (they may in fact be the same liquid), and the chamber 48 must be large enough to take up all the sealing liquid when levels 62 and 64 fall due to removal of the stored liquid via line 26.
