Abstract

1364255 Steel making in a rotary furnace CENTRO SPERIMENTALE METALLURGICO SpA 24 May 1971 [22 May 1970] 16651/71 Heading C7D Steel is made by top blowing a charge in a converter rotating about a vertical axis, the speed and/or direction of rotation being sharply variable. A secondary jet of combustion gas is introduced to burn up to 90% of the evolved carbon monoxide, the jet being so directed as not to impinge on either the bath surface or the refractory lining. The charge may be formed from liquid iron, pig or scrap, flux and possible iron ore, while the refining gas may contain inert gas up to twice the volume of the oxidizing gases; the ratio of internal volume of the converter in m<SP>3</SP>, to the charge weight in metric tons, may be 0À4 at most. In one embodiment the primary jet is displaced from the rotation axis by 10% to 40% of the internal diameter while the distance between lance head and metal surface is 18% to 65% of that diameter; the lance may have one or more nozzles. The secondary jet may be supplied through nozzles having a diameter of 1/50 to 1/150 of their spacing from the melt surface, measured along the nozzle axis, while the secondary lance may have an eccentricity varying from zero to that of the primary lance.
