Abstract

Binary copolymers containing up to 50 per cent of combined vinylidene chloride are prepared by polymerizing diallyl phthalate and vinylidene chloride in an inert solvent, part of the vinylidene chloride being present in the initial reaction mixture and the remainder being added by stages as the polymerization progresses. The inert solvent may be benzene, acetone, dioxane, carbon tetrachloride or 1:2-dichlorethane. As catalyst there may be used azodiisobutyronitrile or benzoyl peroxide. After removal of solvent the product consists of a low molecular weight copolymer in solution in a small quantity of diallyl phthalate, which may be hardened by the action of heat and/or a catalyst, such as tertiary butyl perbenzoate, or by polymerization with another monomer such as diallyl maleate.
