Abstract
A chlorinated polymer or copolymer of butadiene or isoprene contains from 2 to 40% of toluene initially condensed therein. The polymer or copolymer preferably contains from 50 to 70% of chlorine based on the original toluene-containing polymer or copolymer. The polymer may be polybutadiene or polyisoprene, preferably of molecular weight from 800 to 15,000. The polymers may be prepared by polymerizing the corresponding monomers with triphenyl silyl potassium or triphenyl silyl sodium in toluene or in a liquid containing toluene. Although the catalyst may be added gradually it is preferred to add the monomer gradually and to short stop with ethyl alcohol or formic acid. The resulting polymer may be dissolved in tetrachlormethane and treated with gaseous chlorine at 10 DEG to 100 DEG C. The product may be bleached, e.g. sodium hypochlorite and used as coatings.
