Abstract

A condenser for condensing a vapour comprises a chamber 1 containing liquid-coolant 2, a nozzle 9 to direct the vapour downwards into the liquid-coolant, a venturi 4 wholly immersed in the liquid and arranged coaxially below the nozzle, tubes 11 through which cooling-fluid is passed whereby heat is extracted from the system, and an overflow outlet 5 from the <PICT:0791652/III/1> <PICT:0791652/III/2> chamber. The condenser is particularly suitable for condensing exhaust steam from steam engines, because the latent heat of the steam is recovered. Water intended for circulating round an air preheater may be passed through tubes 11. Fuel oil or gases may also be used as cooling-fluids. The cooling fluid may be passed through an outer jacket surrounding the chamber instead of providing tubes 11. A swirl vane 6 is supported in the throat of the venturi to cause the stream of vapour and liquid to be thoroughly mixed. This mixing is further promoted by baffle 7 at the lower end of the venturi. If desired the system of tubes 11 may extend above the liquid-level in the chamber so as to cool the vapours at this point. An extractor pump is connected to outlet 5, and may, if desired, be arranged to keep the pressure in the head-space of the chamber below atmospheric-pressure.
