Abstract
1,006,459. Heat exchangers for cooling gases. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Feb. 4, 1963 [Feb. 13, 1962], No. 4449/63. Headings F4K and F4S. In a heat exchanger in which a gas is cooled by another fluid, a method of increasing the rate of heat transfer from the gas comprises introducing into the gas as it enters the heat exchanger an auxiliary liquid which does not vaporize under working conditions, and separating the gas from the liquid at the gas outlet end of the heat exchanger. In the heat exchanger shown for carrying out the method, the hot gas a flows through tubes 2 over which flows another fluid b receiving heat from the gas. The auxiliary liquid, e.g. a eutectic mixture of diphenyl and diphenyl oxide, enters the tubes 2 through holes or orifices 13. These may be arranged to form the liquid into droplets and to give the liquid a gyratory motion. After the gas-liquid mixture has passed through the tubes the liquid is separated in a member 14 and the gas is withdrawn through a duct 3. The separated liquid collects in a sump 8 from which it is recirculated to the orifices 13 by a variable delivery pump 9. Hairpin or coiled tubes may be used instead of the straight tubes shown.
