Abstract
797,842. Cathode materials and processing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 2, 1956 [Aug. 9, 1955], No. 22985/55. Class 39(1). In the manufacture of an electric discharge device other than a thermionic valve, the emissive portion of the thermionic cathode is made by mixing together powdered alkaline earth metal carbonates, powdered nickel and/or cobalt, and at least one powdered alloy of nickel and/or cobalt and at least one reducing agent (silicon, magnesium, aluminium, titanium, zirconium or tungsten), pressing the mixture into a compact body and heating the body so as to sinter the powder and decompose the carbonates to produce the corresponding oxides. The carbonates constitute between 10 and 50 per cent by weight of the mixture and include at least 10 per cent by molecular proportion of barium carbonate and the reducing agents are present in such a proportion that there are not less than 2À5 atoms of barium to each atom of the reducing agent. The preferred proportions are about 70 per cent by weight of powdered nickel and/or cobalt, 30 per cent by weight of powdered alkaline earth metal carbonates and about 35 per cent by weight of a powdered nickelsilicon alloy comprising about 30 per cent by weight of silicon. Preferably the compact body is formed by pressing the mixture at a pressure of 80 tons/sq. in. into one end of a metal tube which forms part of the cathode so that a disc of the mixture is formed which is cold welded at its rim to the end of the metal tube. The reduction takes place at a temperature of 1050‹C.
