Abstract
781,635. Reciprocating compressors and pumps. SPECIALTIES DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 7, 1955 [March 4, 1955], No. 28648/55. Classes 8(1) and 102(1). In a compressor comprising a housing 15 having a plurality of generally cylindrical axially extending guideways 22, 24 spaced circumferentially with respect to each other, a shaft 51 journalled for rotation in said housing with its axis of rotation centrally located between said guideways and having a cranked section 50, an axial slide 29, 31 for each of said guideways contoured and mounted for slideable and rotary movement therein and having a generally circular transverse bore 33 formed with an opening 34 facing the axis of rotation of said shaft and an axially slideable piston 18 or plunger 19 operatively associated with each of said slides for operation therewith, each transverse bore 33 has mounted for cross-wise and rotary movement therein a generally cylindrical cross-slide 40 having a diametrically extending bore 41, a spider 43 has arms 42 extending through an axial slide opening 34 into a cross-slide bore 41, and the cranked section 50 is centrally journalled for rotation in the spider. The compressor is of the multistage type comprising two identical first stage compression cylinders, a second stage cylinder 12, a third stage cylinder, and a fourth stage cylinder 14. Lubrication is by a pump comprising a plunger 67 with a bore 70 and spring- loaded valve engaging a seat member 71. The plunger is coupled to the slide 31 and during movement thereof to the right the valve remains seated. At the end of the stroke an opening 69 in the pump cylinder is uncovered whereby lubricant enters the left end of the cylinder from the reservoir 61. When the plunger is moved to the left pressure is applied to the lubricant to force same through the valve and the plunger bore 70 to lubricating passages 74, 75, 76. Excess pressure on the lubricant causes a spring-loaded relief valve to lift from its seating member 82 and by-pass the lubricant through a bore 80 to opening 69 and sump 61.
