Abstract

787,199. Disc brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 14, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954], No. 17130/55. Class 103 (1). In a friction member for disc brakes comprising a plurality of segments disposed between circumferentially spaced radially diverging projections of an annular retainer, a plurality of slotted retaining members are fastened to the outer ends of the respective projections adapted to engage torque transmission members in association with ends of the projections and to prevent radial displacement of the disc segments caused by the effect of centrifugal force. In the embodiment illustrated, an aircraft wheel 12 may be braked by means of fluid pressure being supplied to an annular chamber 46 contained in a non-rotatable torque member 38 to force annular piston 44 to the right, thus causing the non-rotatable, axially movable, friction-lining carrying discs 30, 32, 34 and fixed disc 36, to frictionally engage the axially movable discs 24, 26 and 28 which rotate with the wheel 12 through a plurality of keys 20. Each of the rotatable discs 24, 26 and 28 is comprised of a metal spider formed by annular retainer 60 and a plurality of circumferentially spaced radially diverging flat projections 62, as shown in Fig. 3. The outer extremities of projections 62 are flared for added strength and are formed with grooves 43 which slidably engage the keys 20. A plurality of metal brake disc segments 66 are formed between the projections 62 having slotted connections with projections 62 (see Fig. 4; a section through 4-4 of Fig. 3) and annular retainer 60. The slots 68 are of such depth as to permit thermal expansion of the segments and the segments are prevented from moving radially outwards due to centrifugal force towards wheel 12 by the fastening members 80 secured to the outer extremities of the flared projections 62.
