Hydro-mechanical variable-speed gearing comprises a driving annulus 15, a driven planet carrier 14, an hydraulically - operated friction clutch 36 between the annulus and the carrier, stepped planets 12, 13 engaging between the annulus and suns 10, 11 connected through tubular shafts 31, 32 to cylinder blocks 20 receiving axially-slidable pistons 21 co-operating with swash-plates 22 journalled in rings 24 adjustably pivoted about fixed axes 25, and a fixed disc 28 between the blocks 20 with ports 27 for transfer of fluid between the two sets of cylinders. The arrangement is such that at two values in the overall speed-ratio range, when one or other of the plates 22 is vertical, there is no transfer of fluid and the drive is wholly through the epicyclic gearing, while at a third value, corresponding to direct drive, the clutch 36 can be engaged to by-pass the gearing and hydrostatic units. The two first-mentioned values are such that the average transmission of power through the hydrostatic unit over the full speed-ratio range is a minimum. Reverse ratios may also be obtained.
